Heel Spur | Plantar Fasciitis

Inflammation or irritation of the area of bone where it contacts other bones, joints, or muscle attachments can cause the bone to thicken and grow at the point of injury. These growths are known as heel spurs, and are often sharp, pointed and painful. A condition of the foot often associated with heel spurs is plantar fasciitis, which is irritation or inflammation of muscle attachments known as fascia. Conditions that cause local inflammation of the fascia or heel spurs include (but are not limited to) age-related arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and assorted unknown causes.

Since these problems are associated with local inflammation at the foot, any treatments that reduce inflammation and further injury will alleviate the pain and reduce discomfort. Common over the counter medications against inflammation are NSAIDs (non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), such as aspirin and ibuprofen. Anti-pain medications such as Tylenol may also reduce pain temporarily.

Like most foot conditions, heel spurs can be avoided by taking preventative measures. Well-fitted or athletic shoes can prevent one from developing this condition. When walking, 80% of your weight rests on your heel, while only 20% rests on your toes. Since heel spurs affect the area around the ball of the foot, elevation of the heel when walking (via shoe inserts or heel lifts) can reduce further injury and inflammation. Stronger measures may be necessary if the condition is severe such as physician administered steroid injections, or surgery.
