Neuroma | Foot Pain

Morton’s neuroma is a little known condition that affects scores of patients. A neuroma occurs when nerve tissue begins to thicken. Morton’s neuroma occurs at the ball of the foot. While neuroma can occur in any area of the foot (or, for that matter, any area of the body), Morton’s neuroma is the most common.

Morton’s neuroma can occur due to constant pressure to the ball of the foot. Often, improperly fitting shoes can be the culprit. Runners and athletes may experience neuroma, especially if they tend to run on the balls of their feet. Those who have a low arch or who have bunions tend to be more susceptible to developing Morton’s neuroma.

Symptoms of Morton’s neuroma can vary from patient to patient. Some patients will experience a sharp shooting pain, while others will experience a tingling sensation. There are even some patients that will feel a complete numbness. However, most patients experience the pesky feeling that a hard object is inside the ball of their foot. Symptoms may come and go, or be persistent. Some patients are able to temporarily remedy their symptoms with massage or rest.

The severity of Morton’s neuroma cases can vary greatly. In mild cases, simple at-home treatments can rid one of their neuroma. These at-home treatments include the use of ice to reduce swelling, or an over-the-counter shoe insert that provides cushioned support. In more severe cases, medical intervention is usually necessary. Treatments for Morton’s neuroma include orthotics and prescription anti-inflammatory drugs.
